#BusinessTipTuesday – National Nonprofit Day

Friday August 17th, is known as National Nonprofit Day, which celebrates the awareness, research, and aid provided through organizations. Whether it is to benefit individuals, groups of people, animals, communities, or others, nonprofits all around the country are responsible for making a difference and having a positive impact in many lives.

Corporate Social Responsibility has become increasingly popular over the last decade or so. Many businesses are moving towards more eco-friendly options, involving themselves in the community, and providing for others in need. While some of these efforts by corporations are on a large scale that does not mean every charitable action needs to be. Small businesses can actively participate in charitable donations on a local, national or global scale.

Though, participating in nonprofit events or donations is food for the soul, it can also truly benefit your business. According to a 2010 study by Cone Communications, 85% of consumers have a more positive image of a company when it supports a cause they care about; 90% of consumers want companies to tell them how they are supporting charitable causes. By using this data to create a marketing strategy that highlights a nonprofit your business plans to be involved with, you will reach more customers and make more of an impact; thus, increasing the chances consumers will buy your products or services. Keep in mind to choose a nonprofit that aligns with your business’s mission, values, and beliefs. Another benefit to charitable donations has to do with the tax deduction that can arise. Only certain types of contributions qualify so it is important to research organizations if receiving the tax benefit is something you are looking in to. Doing research on nonprofits and charities is important in general, as well. When you are deciding where your business should donate you should know how reputable the organization is, what the money is used for, and who benefits from the donations.
