#BusinessTipTuesday – National Photograph Month

For this week’s #BusinessTipTuesday, we will be focusing on National Photograph Month which is celebrated in May! Many people may ask, how important is using a high quality picture when marketing a business or product? Well, as the common phrase goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words” and that most definitely rings true when marketing your business. Just as the way you dress and present yourself speaks to whom you are perceived as, so does a photograph for your products or business.

Whether it is a photo on your website, social media accounts, flyers, business cards, or any other marketing tool the use of a high quality image is something you should be focusing on. People often look to photos to see what service or product you are providing to the customer. Instead of just hearing or reading about your business or products, potential customers like to have that visual. If you are showing a bad or blurry picture, people can translate that to a subpar product or an unsatisfactory business. This goes hand and hand with your branding and logo, as well. It is vital to take the time to create a logo that you can foresee yourself liking for a number of years. Although re-branding may be something that happens in your business, it is a smart business move to start with a logo and brand that you love and support fully. No matter what it is, you want to be 100% behind what you are presenting to the public.

When starting a business, the budgets tend to be tight but skimping out on spending money when it comes to photographers or marketing agencies should be something you think twice about. It is worth it to pay the money for professionals to create this type of content. If the budget is tight, see what payment options are available when researching photographers or marketing agencies; maybe payment plans are available or you can barter by trading your work and time for theirs. If you really do not have the money to spend on these things, especially taking photos, I suggest you do a lot of research on how to take the right kind of photos; for example, lighting, details, colors, etc. If things are done right from the start then that will be something that has a lasting impact on your business as well as something you do not regret down the line.

Recently, while listening to a speaker who owns a food consulting business, I asked what was one of the biggest “no-no’s” they have seen another business make. The answer to that question was having a poor brand or logo for their business and product. He also noted that he has found people often buy certain things based off the label, regardless of reading what the product is made of or what it has to offer. This goes to show the importance of branding, logos, and photos!

Here is a great article and infographic that shows why you should use images in your marketing! Remember the University of Scranton Small Business Development Center is here to help with any business needs. Please visit our website, www.scrantonsbdc.com, for more information.
